ROBERT (10/91), whose intelligence and exceptional memory are good strengths, is especially adept at hands-on learning. And he plans to be a carpenter one day. While still socially and emotionally young for his age, it has not stopped him from developing a wide variety of interests and activities or from having a great sense of humor. He enjoys video games and riding his bike, reading (especially Harry Potter), and listening to books on tape. Robert loves interacting with animals. It was through his past participation in a therapeutic riding program that he developed a love of horses and riding. Robert’s favorite activities include: fishing, bike riding, and learning interesting facts. Robert has a good imagination and he enjoys playing the game of "what if," where he lets his imagination go and creates wonderful scenarios. At age 17, Robert would love to have the opportunity learn to drive a car. Robert is a handsome young man with blond hair, blue eyes and a charming smile. Robert has proven that he has good capacity for forming attachments as he has established several healthy relationships with adults.

Robert’s hard work to improve his grades and do well in school is paying off. He continues to benefit from having special education services to assist him in math, reading, and expressive language development. On the home front, his foster parents are helping him develop life skills, including cooking, cleaning and self care.

Now in therapeutic foster care, Robert’s participation in a specialized group therapy program has given him a big boost forward. He is becoming increasingly able to identify the internal and external things around him that trigger his acting out; and he is much better able to manage his feelings and to express them in appropriate ways. His interactions with other kids have greatly improved. Another sign of his personal growth is his ability now to ask for help in resolving conflicts. He continues to benefit, too, from ongoing counseling, and medication therapy to help him manage his feelings of sadness and anxiety.

Robert has been in care since 1999. Sadly, he still feels the loss of his beloved foster father who died in an accident in 2002. Robert needs and wants a family of his own. At an age when most teens are pulling away from adults, the fact that Robert wants to become part of a family is a wonderful strength and a good opportunity for new parents to connect with him.

Robert will likely do best with folk(s) who truly enjoy teenage boys and who get a real sense of satisfaction from guiding them through adolescence. Being an only child or the oldest would also be helpful. Robert thrives on positive attention. A well structured home with nurturing parents who are consistent with rules and limits help him feel safe. While Robert could live in a rural or urban environment, being in or near an area where he could ride horses and be around animals would be especially wonderful for him.
