DEREK (11/96), who would like to tell you a bit about himself, is legally free and ready for an adoptive family.

“My name is Derek and I like to make people laugh. I like drawing, sports, being outdoors, and riding on just about anything with wheels – dirt bikes, skateboards, 4-wheelers, bikes and scooters. I also like baseball and think I’m a good pitcher. I love animals of all kinds and hope to have a pet one day. I really want a snake! I want a family who will treat me nice and will help me to make good choices. I want a house with lots of rooms to play and a place where I can play outside.”

Derek is a fun-loving and very humorous child. He provides lots of entertainment for others and would bring lots of laughter and happiness into a family. His counselor states that with the right supports, Derek is a "star" who can follow the rules and is making super progress in the program as well as at school. Derek is currently placed in a residential treatment facility where he receives lots of supports in the areas of social skills and appropriate management of his challenges.

Derek responds very well to animals. In fact, his current therapist states that she often brings in her dog to help Derek focus on certain parts of his day. Animals would be very helpful in aiding Derek in his transition into a forever home and managing his behavior on a daily basis.

Derek needs an experienced family who can provide structure and supervision, while being flexible enough to know what Derek needs and how to meet those needs. Derek responds very well to physical nurturing and a parent who can give this to him will help Derek to feel safe. Derek is waiting to bring his warmth and laughter into a home that is a balance of love and boundaries.
