DONNY (5/92) is a 16-year teen who more than anything wants to have the opportunity to have a family of his own – a family with parents who with be social and behavioral role models, and who will teach, guide, and prepare him for adulthood. While Donald has been in foster care way too long, he has made some huge gains, especially over the last few years. As part of his support system, he has been participating in equine therapy. To say he is enthusiastic about it would be an understatement. He loves it! It is really hard for him to wait his turn to ride one of the horses. In addition to the therapeutic value of riding horses, he has the best time and feels so good about himself. Donny also has joined a program through his high school for drug free youth, which allows him to get various discounts in the community because he is “drug free.” Some of his best behavioral times are when he’s earned a special off-site privilege, and he can enjoy social activities such as going out to dinner, seeing a movies, or hanging out with friends. Donny has his first girlfriend, and the staff at his group home are providing support and an appropriate level of supervision. Donny enjoys helping around the house and being included in holiday related activities like decorating and cooking meals. He willingly does his chores of folding and putting away his laundry. Donny shows childlike enthusiasm when he is given the opportunities to participate in new activities and adventures. Donny, who came into care 1994, is legally free.

Donny is rightly proud of his recent report cards. The academic and behavioral supports that he has in the classroom encourage him to do well. He is also proud of winning a medal in Special Olympics.

Regular therapeutic supports, as well as a consistent daily routine and attentive supervision help to keep Donald on track. Donny will, though, tell you himself that there are times when he still has some anger and attitude issues when he doesn’t get what he wants.

Donny has just begun reconnecting via telephone with his twin brother, Devin. He and Devin have not lived together for over five years. Donny would very much like to be placed in a family that will help him continue to have contact with his brother and who will understand his need to know that Devin is safe. Devin is the only family Donny has ever known, and Donny is very protective of him.

Donny’s worker is looking for a two-parent or a single dad home with a strong support system to help guide and prepare for adulthood. Because of Donny’s love of horses, he might do especially well in a rural or semi-rural setting with an adoptive family that has horses. It would be wonderful for Donny to have adoptive folk(s) who have a good grasp of the needs of children who have mild developmental disabilities. Donny is eligible for DDS and SSI.
