JESUS (11/97) is a very likeable boy with a good sense of humor and outgoing personality. Although he's a preteen, Jesus still enjoys snuggles and hugs with significant adults. Like many boys his age, he does best when he’s kept busy. Boredom sets in if left to his own devices for long, and he may get into mischief. Some of his favorite pastimes are outdoor activities like going to the beach and having adventures. He also enjoys arts and crafts, including drawing and coloring. Of course, he loves to watch TV and play age-appropriate video games. During a recent introductory visit with a new social worker, Jesus showed how eager he is to engage and interact with attentive, caring adults. He invited the social worker to play a video game with him, and when she told him that she didn’t know how, he said he would teach her. And with those words he very calmly and with great patience and kindness showed her how to use the handset. As she was struggling to get a handle on what to do, one of his housemates suggested that he play the game with Jesus instead. Jesus turned him down, saying that he was teaching his new friend how to play. The social worker found Jesus endearing and was very impressed by the consideration, kindness, and diligence he brought to the task of teaching her. Jesus feels very connected to his Mexican heritage. Jesus, who feels very connected to his Mexican heritage, is legally free.

Jesus’ rough childhood and fear of abandonment is never far from the surface. His treatment program is helping him to manage his attention difficulties, high energy, and mood swings. Jesus really likes his counselor, and looks forward to participating in one-on-one sessions as well as family sessions.

For the 2009-2010 year, Jesus will be in sixth grade. Jesus benefits from being in a small, classroom with behavioral supports. His program also provides academic supports in all subjects.

His social worker wants to hear from experienced folks (couples and single moms and dads!) who have a good grasp of how early trauma impacts a child’s sense of well being and safety and his emotional and behavioral development. Being willing to participate with him in family counseling during his transition into their home could be a wonderful way for his adoptive folk(s) to show their love and commitment to him. While Jesus seems to do best as the youngest child in the home, he could do well with siblings a few years older or younger than he is. Jesus enjoyed a long foster placement with a single mom who had a ton of experience parenting developmentally disabled foster kids and could do well in another such family.
