Full of affection, curiosity, and energy JOHNATHEN (5/01) is eager to be part of a forever family. This handsome seven-year-old has bright blue eyes, blond hair, a warm, friendly smile, and a kind heart. His laugh is infectious and a joyful sound to hear. Johnathen has a great sense of curiosity about the world around him and asks lots of questions. He is easy to engage in conversation and enjoys talking and interacting with the adults and children in his life. His very good ability to form attachments can be seen in his relationships with his current care providers and children in his foster home. Johnathen, who came into care most recently in August 2006, is not yet legally free.

While Johnathen was prenatally exposed to drugs, his special needs are believed to be primarily due to his early years of instability and multiple placements. He has delays in his visual-motor skills, auditory, attention, and auditory processing abilities, fine and gross motor skills, tactile processing, and receptive sensory input regulation. He also has some cognitive delays (but not mental retardation).

Since October 2007, when he became eligible for Developmental Disabilities Services (DDS), Johnathen has been in the care of his current specialized foster home, where his delays and other needs can be more fully addressed. During the school year, Johnathen is in a program that incorporates occupational therapy as part of his curriculum.

Johnathen has half-sisters, with whom he lived prior to coming into foster care in August 2006. He will be counting on his adoptive folk(s) to help him maintain some contact with them as he is growing up.

Johnathen’s worker is especially interested in hearing from prospective adoptive folk(s) – couples and single moms and single dads – who have had experience in helping children with multiple development issues. It would also be helpful for the family chosen to adopt Johnathen to have an understanding of how early neglect can impact a child’s sense of safety and self esteem, and his overall development. An important parental trait will be the ability and willingness to advocate for the services that Johnathen will need throughout his childhood and adolescence to help him realize his best potential.
