EDDIE (8/95) is very engaging and endearing and loves telling jokes. He has a nice sense of curiosity about the world around him. Eddie loves computers and electronics and PlayStation games. Because change and transitions are very difficult for him, videos are one way to introduce him to new ideas, activities, and people. Earning rewards and getting praise for good behavior can be great motivators for Eddie; he wants to please but needs lots of support. The significant folks in his life are his foster parents (especially his foster dad), therapist, teacher, and private agency social worker, all of whom adore him. To Eddie they are the “family” that has helped him grow and develop and feel safe and secure. He has developed bonds with all of these folks. Legally free, Eddie came into foster care in early 2006.
Eddie, who has medical issues related to a kidney condition and high blood pressure, is managing these issues through diet and medication. He’s learning to deal with his day-to-day medical needs by reading food labels, tracking his sodium intake, taking his blood pressure and tracking the pressures on a chart. He sits down with his foster parents each week while he fills his pill container and is present when they order his meds.
While having adoptive folk(s) with experience parenting children with medical issues could be helpful, what Eddie needs most is to have adoptive parent(s) who can help him to deal with his emotional and behavioral issues by showing him strategies for self soothing and anger management, assisting him to increase his social skills, providing regular opportunities for him to get out in the community and involved in activities, praising and encouraging him every single day, giving him clear rules, expectations, and limits; holding him accountable for his choices and behavior; and following through with consequences when he misbehaves.
Now in sixth grade, Eddie is working toward graduating to a mainstream classroom.
While a two parent family would likely be able to meet his needs best, Eddie’s worker does not want to miss out on hearing from those exceptional single moms and dads who have strong support systems of family, friends, and community resources. There are lots of rewards in parenting this intelligent, delightful boy.
