KATHRYN (8/98), ROBERT (8/99) and CYNTHIA (1/03), who are more attached to one another than anyone else, are counting on growing up together. Nine year old Katie has three loves – reading, horses and cooking. With her upbeat personality, she has a positive outlook on life. Eight-year old, Bobby is a sweet boy who is protective of his sisters and likes to see himself as the family comedian. Five-year old Cindy has a quiet demeanor but lights up when she’s able to do the things the "big kids" do.
An affectionate, friendly child with thick brown hair and hazel eyes, Katie loves to be around adults and seeks out hugs and other physical expressions of affection. Her lack of fear of strangers, though, makes her vulnerable, and she needs very attentive supervision on the home front. She also needs help at home and in therapy to strengthen her personal boundaries and develop good personal safety skills. To help alleviate Katie’s fear of not have enough food, her foster mom has Katie help her to plan and cook the foster family’s meals. Although Katie make significant academic gain being home schooled for a year, she is now benefiting from being in a regular school program where she has the behavioral supports to help her curb her tendencies to get aggressive when frustrated or overwhelmed. Timeouts and loss of privileges are useful when consequences are needed.
Almost a year younger than Katie, Bobby has straight brown hair and deep blue eyes. A typical boy who loves video games, playing outdoors, and riding on his scooter, he can spend a lot of time entertaining himself building creative things with Legos. It is when he has good structure and consistency in his daily life that Bobby feels most safe and secure. While he gets along really well with his foster sisters, he can be a bit of a pest around his foster brothers and also struggles with peer relationships at school. His efforts to be class clown can go too far, and he gets in trouble for being disruptive and not treating others nicely. While Bobby does best in math, he is behind academically and struggles with reading. He has been referred for extra academic support and is also participating in counseling services.
A darling little girl with big brown eyes and a head of brown wispy curls, Cindy is very busy bouncing from place to place. Because her needs were not met amidst the chaos of her early years, Cindy is slow to trust. As with her older sister, Katie, Cindy is very affectionate to everyone, including strangers. She, too, needs an in-home safety plan with clear rules, expectations, and limits amidst attentive parental supervision and role modeling of healthy adult-to-child and person-to-person boundaries. Cindy is attending a Head Start preschool and thoroughly loves the classroom, where she has speech therapy and extra behavioral supports. She is working on learning to share, developing simple problem solving skills and addressing her fear around not having enough to eat. Cindy, who responds well to praise, short term goals, and rewards. usually ends her day with foster mom singing her to sleep.
All three of the children have had recent psychological evaluations, which indicate that the children need to be placed together, and need to have permanency as soon as possible.
This wonderful trio of siblings packs a whole lot of personality and playfulness. Their adoptive folks need to be willing to jump in, commit to keeping the kids together, and work with each of child’s very different needs. Katie, Bobby, and Cindy need folks who can offer just the right mix of structure, compassion, consistency and love.
