Chelsea, age 10, wears glasses and enjoys good health. Currently, she’s making progress in a social skills building class where she’s learning how to make her feelings and wants known without being bossy, and how to joke around without being hurtful. Chelsea is a child who needs a lot of affirmation and encouragement from the adults around her, as she does not yet have the level of self esteem that allows her to accept criticism. In school, she has been making significant academic gains in all subjects with the support of an individual education plan. Kayla, age 9, has light brown hair and green eyes. She too wears glasses and enjoys good health. Kayla takes medication to help her to manage her attention difficulties and high energy. In school, she is benefiting from having extra supports for reading, writing, and math. In addition to working on issues of past trauma and anxiety, Chelsea is working with her counselor on building her social skills. Kayla is working on developing behavioral tools to help her increase her attention and curb her energy. She’s also becoming more willing to talk about her feelings so that she doesn’t have to act them out as much. She is also working on strengthening her personal boundaries. The girls have two sisters and two brothers with whom they are close. They have frequent visitation with these four siblings, three of whom are placed with their aunt and one with another relative. It will be important for Chelsea and Kayla to maintain contact with their siblings. Chelsea and Kayla need patient, nurturing adoptive parent(s) who will provide the girls with the structure and firm boundaries that help them feel safe. It will be important, too, for their parent(s) to be strong educational advocates and highly supportive of the girls’ on-going mental health counseling. Chelsea and Kayla are delightful girls who want stability and permanency with an active, fun-loving family which will take pride in their accomplishments and help them maintain their relationships with their siblings. |
