Karalyn has a high level of special needs that include attention difficulties and high energy as well as her difficulty trusting and forming attachment. While Karalyn has responded well to counseling in the past, her therapist underscores that much of the work she has left to do should be done once she is in a very committed permanent family. Her social worker emphasizes Karalyn should be the youngest or only child in her adoptive family, so that she does not need to be in competition with other children for parental time and attention. Karalyn came into foster care with her two sisters in October, 2002. Because of each girls needs, the decision was made to separate the siblings. Her sisters are now in their permanent homes, while Karalyn is awaiting her turn. She longs to be accepted and wants parent(s) who will claim her as their own. Her sisters’ new parents are helping the girls maintain contact with Karalyn thru visits and telephone contacts. Karalyn will be counting on her adoptive folks to do their part in helping these sisters maintain contact as they are growing up. Folk(s) who have a good grasp of attachment issues, who are willing to give Karalyn the time and space to learn to trust them, and who have the stamina to hang in there with her over the rough patches, will be rewarded many times over. Karalyn has lots of potential. |
