In a matter of four years, Seth has been confronted with multiple losses and separations. This time, however, the loss includes the loss of contact (at least for now) with his younger brother. Seth is going to need to have therapeutic support in place soon to help him sort through and deal with his feelings of grief, loss, sadness, anger, and abandonment. The early years of Seth’s life are just now beginning to be illuminated, and his parent(s) will need to be willing to tenderly hear his memories. There are some different parenting tactics that have proved to work pretty well with Seth. Seth reports that he has a hard time listening when he is in trouble, so one strategy that has proven to work well is to engage Seth in eye contact and to use redirection. Very clear consequences, expectations and boundaries help lessen Seth’s feeling of anxiety. Seth’s attachment seems to be at a younger level, so sometimes his expressions of affection seem much younger than his chronological age. He definitely seems to soak up praise, encouragement and gentle demonstrations of nurturing! Seth’s worker would like to hear from two parent families who have no children at home or who have children much older than Seth. Seth would like to have a family where the parents are kind, calm, and patient and don’t have to resort to yelling, where he could have older brothers and sisters, and where he could live in at least a semi-rural area. Seth says he would really likes pets including a cat and maybe a wolf (don’t worry, we know the wolf isn’t a likely family pet). Seth’s worker emphasizes that he really needs to be the youngest child in his new family. It would also be an act of love and commitment for his adoptive parent(s) to participate with Seth in family therapy during his transition into their home and, perhaps, for some time thereafter. Seth wants to belong and be a part of family! |
