ANTHONY (6/98), or Tony as he likes to be called, loves school and loves to learn! A handsome boy with bright brown eyes, he has a great smile and a kind heart! Tony interacts very well with adults and is increasing his social skills with peers. Tony wants to be right in the midst of whatever is going on and thrives on attention from parents and other adults; telling jokes or swapping stories are just some of the ways that he might seek attention. Tony also loves to read and discuss books, as well as watch TV and talk about what he’s learned on the Discovery Channel and the Animal Channel, which have some of his favorite programming. Building with Legos and working on model jets are other areas of interest. Some of Tony’s favorite pastimes with his foster family include going to the beach, camping, and fishing. For the past few years, Tony has enjoyed participating in sports and has had a lot of fun playing basketball and soccer. His favorite activity, though, is Tae Kwon Do. He has earned belts and hopes to continue to practice this martial art. He’s even finding out that being a bit big for his age can be an advantage. He is also learning that sports are healthy for you both physically and mentally.

Academically, Tony does very well and is at grade level. He benefits greatly, though, from having supportive parent(s) on the home front who are willing to maintain regular contact with teachers to assure that he is following directions, completing his assigned tasks in the classroom, and being attentive (Tony has some symptoms of attention difficulties). Due to a previous injury to his right eye, Tony wears corrective lenses, and when playing outdoors or playing sports, he wears protective goggles.

Tony responds well to structure and positive reinforcement. While Tony is learning to trust the adults in his life to make good choices for him, he needs to have therapeutic supports to help lessen symptoms of past trauma and his fears about the future.

Tony entered foster care in October 2005. He will be counting on his adoptive folk(s) to help him maintain contact with or obtain updates for his younger sister and brother who are in separate adoptive placements.

Having a nurturing, interactive dad in his life will be very important for Tony, who tends to be much more readily responsive to men than women. Tony needs calm, nurturing, patient folk(s) – a couple or single dad – who have lots of time to devote to parenting him, and who will provide the structure, routine, consistency and daily encouragement that help him do well. Tony’s need for parental time and attention will likely be met best if he is an only child in his new home, or the youngest of one or two much older siblings. His adoptive folk(s) will want to encourage and, perhaps, participate in his love of learning about the natural world and animals. It will be important for them to take the time to understand the significant losses he has experienced and be willing to participate in whatever therapeutic resources may be needed to help him move forward in his life.
