MARTIN (9/94) is a great kid who is thrilled when given the opportunity to ride his skateboard or ride his bike. Being quite athletic, he enjoys participating in football, basketball and snowboarding. And he would love to learn to rock climb. An attractive boy with light brown hair, brown eyes, and a slim build, he enjoys watching movies and playing video games when he’s not outdoors. Although he begrudgingly admits it, Martin enjoys reading. He is a bright kid, and with the right motivation could succeed academically and beyond. Martin has a great sense of humor and those that know him best believe he would do great in theater or another field where he could use and explore his imagination. He is a loving kid who wants to be accepted. Martin wants to be adopted and understands the importance of being stable and living in a permanent home.

During the 2008-2009 school year, Martin will be in eighth grade. In the past when Martin's life has been stable, he has earned awards in the classroom for “Most Improved Student In All Areas!” By the end of the last school year, though, he was struggling to apply himself and was neglecting his homework. His adoptive folk(s) will need to encourage him and help him get his motivation reenergized Physically healthy, Martin manages bouts of asthma and allergies with medication, and has a medication component to help lessen his feeling of fear and anxiety.

Martin’s participation in a residential treatment program between 2004 and 2006 gave him a big boost forward. Since returning to therapeutic foster care, he has been demonstrating better capacity and willingness to trust adults and to form relationships, especially with folks who are patient, and trustworthy. A wonderful way for his adoptive folks to demonstrate their love and commitment to him would be to participate with him in family counseling during his transition into their home, or even for some months thereafter.

Martin needs stability, structure, and predictability in his daily life. He also need the security of clear, firm rules and limits, as well as a safety plan in the home with attentive supervision. He is very responsive to nurturing, encouragement, and positive regard.

Having adoptive folk(s) who have a good grasp of how neglect and abuse can impact a child’s sense of well being and development will be important. Martin’s worker wants to hear from singles and couples who love young teens and have strong support systems and good community resources. Having a trustworthy dad figure in his life could go a long way in helping Martin overcome the trauma of his past. While he needs to be an only child or the youngest in the home, he would benefit from having emotionally healthy, well-adjusted older siblings as he tends to imitate the behavior of those around him. Martin needs to have some contact with his siblings and his birth mother (he worries about her). Such contact will help him move forward in his own life.
