Legally free, ERIC (5/99) is an engaging eight-year-old boy who has a great smile, expressive brown eyes, and an energetic personality. He has a great sense of humor and enjoys making funny faces for the camera. Eric is quick to warm up to new people, and enjoys talking and sharing stories. He is very verbal! He is also a very good reader who enjoys reading aloud to others. An adventurous boy, Eric has lots of interests. Photography is one; he enjoys taking photos and says that he would like to be a photographer and a police officer when he grows up. Eric is a child with a quick wit who enjoys spending time with peers and adults playing sports and games. He also likes playing video games. Currently, Eric is taking piano lessons, and last spring, he was involved with an after school chess club. Among his favorite activities are playing football and hockey, and participating in martial arts. He has won a number of belts in Tae Kwon Do of which he is very proud.
Prenatally exposed to drugs, Eric weighed just two-and-a-half pounds at birth. He initially entered foster care from the hospital after his birth and then returned to the care of his birth family. As an infant, Eric received Early Intervention Services and support while in his birth mother’s care. He has a history of asthma and bronchitis. Eric has been in foster care this last time since March 2004. Eric’s mother has had limited contact, sending him gifts for the holidays and has written letters.
Eric has responded positively to weekly counseling, and he is now able to identify his feelings and openly discusses adoption. He is able to form attachments to caregivers and seeks his foster mother’s reassurance. For Eric to do well, he needs good structure, a consistent and predictable daily routine, and clear rules and limits. He does best when he has an adult nearby to redirect him when needed, such as reminding him to slow down when he’s moving too fast. Currently, Eric is on medication to help manage his attention difficulties and high energy issues. A November 2007, psychological evaluation indicated that Eric had symptoms of attachment issues, attention difficulties, high energy, sadness, and written expression disorder.
For the 2008-2009 school year, Eric will be in fourth grade, where he is expected to do well. Last year. Eric had an individual plan with additional academic help on an as-needed basis only. Eric’s difficulty with written expression is his only real limitation to learning, and his teacher and foster parents are working with him to improve his abilities in that area.
Nurturing, patient, kind folk(s) who have a good grasp of children’s mental health and behavioral issues associated with attention difficulties and high energy would be a good match for Eric. He needs lots of structure with a consistent daily routine to help him to feel safe and secure. He also needs parent(s) who will follow his counseling and medication recommendations and participate with him in counseling as requested. It is hoped that Eric’s adoptive family will be willing to consider having some level of openness with his siblings and with his birth mother. Eric may be eligible for adoption assistance.
