DAVID (10/95) is a handsome preteen. His great smile and love of laughing and joking help him stand out from the crowd. Generally easy going, he’s a “pretty normal” almost 13-year old. David thrives on physical activity, especially sports such as baseball, football, and basketball. He’s also happy skateboarding or throwing a Frisbee, and would love to have opportunities to ride BMX bikes and operate remote controlled cars and planes. He had great times snowmobiling and four-wheeling with his previous foster father. Indoors, David likes UGO cards, Hip Hop, and classic rock music. A fun-loving youth, folks enjoys hanging out with David. He generally gets along well with peers and adults, and is a positive role model to younger children. Despite multiple moves, David has remained on track academically and enjoys overall good health.
David came into foster care in 2005. Over the years he has been in several shelter, foster, and relative homes. When his two primary relative care givers passed away not long ago, it was a huge sense of loss for David.
Being willing to participate with him in family counseling during the transition into his new home would be a wonderful way for his adoptive parent(s) to show their love and commitment to David. Of course, he will need to have their support as he continues to work in counseling to deal with issues of grief, loss, trust and attachment.
David, who has a strong sense of fairness and justice, can have a short fuse. When angry, he is good at separating himself from the situation until he is calm. With the help of his therapist, he has developed some useful and appropriate coping strategies. After he calms himself down, he is able to talk with some insight about what happened. David is now working on learning to get a handle on things prior to actually getting upset.
Because David is a good model for younger children and is able to get along well with same age and older youths, a large family that is busy and active may be an excellent choice for him. A large family could also provide an opportunity for David to begin a slower process of attachment with more time and the space to find a place for himself within his new family.
