ANDREW (6/99) is a slender boy with very short blond hair and blue eyes who loves to play video games. This little boy has a special relationship with one of his birth aunts who lives in eastern Washington. He enjoys being able to speak on the phone with her and to have some visits with her. To help Andrew go forward in his growth and development, his foster parents and others give him goals or rewards to work toward, which help him to slowly yet surely make needed behavioral changes. Andrew is currently placed with his siblings, which he enjoys.

Legally free, Andrew came into foster care in the fall of 2005. Andrew has special needs that likely have environmental and biological roots (including possible exposure to alcohol and drugs in utero). His early years were rough, and by the time he came into foster care, his emotional, behavioral, and educational needs were challenging to him and to others.

A very structured and very predictable daily routine helps Andrew to stay on track. Such structure includes clear rules and limits, goals and rewards to work toward, attentive parental supervision to redirect him when needed, and consistent consequences for misbehavior.

Andrew also has the support of individual counseling with a private psychologist for behavioral issues. His therapy program includes a medication component that helps lessen his attention difficulties and high energy. A neuropsychological evaluation is being scheduled to get a better handle on how to address his issues.

To help give him a boost forward behaviorally and academically, Andrew repeated Kindergarten. For the 2008-2009 school year, he will be in a specialized second-grade classroom with the opportunity to transition into a regular classroom program when he has achieved a better level of control of his behavior.

Andrew’s social worker especially wants to hear from prospective adoptive folk(s) who have a good grasp of the residual effects of early neglect and of fetal alcohol/drug exposure. With the right supports on the home front and at school, Andrew will have what he needs to be able to successful in a family. This resilient little boy has come through rough early beginnings and needs kind, patient (yet firm!) parent(s) who are willing to hang in there with him over the rough spots.
