ANTONIA (6/96), DANIEL (4/97), and MARIA (8/98) are very connected and want the opportunity to grow up together. Antonia, who likes to be called Tonia, is a responsible, friendly, kind girl with a good heart. She enjoys one-on-one time with favorite adults and is very responsive to praise and encouragement. This past summer, both Tonia and Maria enjoyed the multitude of activities offered at summer day camp, such as arts and crafts and developing skits, dances, and songs. They love entertaining at home. Tonia and Maria had fun being on a cheerleading team recently, and Tonia is entertaining thoughts of participating in team sports. She may need encouragement on the home front to follow through. Maria, who is engaging, social, and fun, loves being the center of attention. She also likes to please. Her therapist describes her as “bubbly and friendly” and “ready to move forward and have a “permanent family.” Daniel, who is typically shy, can be very sweet and endearing. He loves to be active, and had a good time playing baseball last spring. Daniel also likes to draw and play computer and video games. Both he and Maria have a good time riding their bikes and scooters, and swimming. Daniel, who likes to learn about the world around him, enjoys doing things with his foster mom. Legally free, the children came into foster care in February 2007.

Tonia and Daniel are both in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Tonia, who was the primary caregiver for her siblings in the past, is making progress in talking about her fears and managing her feelings. While Daniel is learning to talk about his feelings, he also requires medication therapy and specialized foster care to help manage his symptoms of impulsiveness, high energy, and attention difficulties, and to address his emotional and social delays. Maria, who is the family peacemaker, still tries to put a positive spin on things and pretend everything is fine. A focus of her therapy is to express her wants and needs honestly and directly. Because the children will all need therapy for the foreseeable future, having adoptive folk(s) willing to engage with them in family therapy during the adoption transition would be an act of love and commitment to them.

Tonia is now in seventh grade, Daniel is in sixth grade, and Maria is in fifth grade. Tonia likes school and enjoys her peers and teachers. Because of struggles in math, language and writing, she will be tested for special education supports. The last report card Daniel got described him as thoughtful and artistic with strengths in math and science and grade level reading skills. It also said that he was well liked by peers but needed re-direction several times a day in the classroom. Although Maria has been in a regular classroom, her work has been below grade level in math and reading. She, too, may need testing for special education supports. The children all need parental support to complete homework and turn it in.

Active, two-parent families who enjoy camping, hiking, swimming, playing games, and attending sports events would be wonderful. A smaller family where each child could have his or her fair share of parental time and attention would be ideal. Being the only children or the youngest could be helpful, too. It will, of course, be essential for the adoptive parents to take pride in the children’s Mexican roots, yet it is also important to help the kids learn about the rich legacy of the Crow and Cheyenne tribes who, according to birth family lore, are part of their heritage.
