Tonia and Daniel are both in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Tonia, who was the primary caregiver for her siblings in the past, is making progress in talking about her fears and managing her feelings. While Daniel is learning to talk about his feelings, he also requires medication therapy and specialized foster care to help manage his symptoms of impulsiveness, high energy, and attention difficulties, and to address his emotional and social delays. Maria, who is the family peacemaker, still tries to put a positive spin on things and pretend everything is fine. A focus of her therapy is to express her wants and needs honestly and directly. Because the children will all need therapy for the foreseeable future, having adoptive folk(s) willing to engage with them in family therapy during the adoption transition would be an act of love and commitment to them.
Tonia is now in seventh grade, Daniel is in sixth grade, and Maria is in fifth grade. Tonia likes school and enjoys her peers and teachers. Because of struggles in math, language and writing, she will be tested for special education supports. The last report card Daniel got described him as thoughtful and artistic with strengths in math and science and grade level reading skills. It also said that he was well liked by peers but needed re-direction several times a day in the classroom. Although Maria has been in a regular classroom, her work has been below grade level in math and reading. She, too, may need testing for special education supports. The children all need parental support to complete homework and turn it in.
Active, two-parent families who enjoy camping, hiking, swimming, playing games, and attending sports events would be wonderful. A smaller family where each child could have his or her fair share of parental time and attention would be ideal. Being the only children or the youngest could be helpful, too. It will, of course, be essential for the adoptive parents to take pride in the children’s Mexican roots, yet it is also important to help the kids learn about the rich legacy of the Crow and Cheyenne tribes who, according to birth family lore, are part of their heritage. |
