While Michael is physically healthy, he has developmental delays and is much like a 10 to 11-year old in his daily living skills. In reading, writing, and math, his skills are those of a second or third grade student. Michael has made huge gains over the past year. He was discharged from group therapeutic care in January 2009 and has been in the same foster home since then. He has completed treatment to address personal boundary issues and is doing fabulous in most areas. Despite, his growth, he still requires a predictable, structured routine in his home and at school. Due to his delays, concrete, step by step directions and consistent consequences are a must. Michael has done quite well in his school program, where he has an individualized educational plan to address his learning delays and provide a more structured, less stimulating classroom setting. Michael would do best with same age siblings in his adoptive home or with young adult siblings. His worker is especially interested in hearing from single dads and couples who are patient, calm, warm, accepting, and nurturing. Participating in counseling with Michael during his transition into his adoptive home could be a great way for his adoptive parent(s) to show their love and commitment to him. It would also let him know that his family uses therapeutic and other outside resources to help family members make changes. |
