Legally free, Ignacio, or “Nacho” as he likes to be called, is a polite, friendly, easy-to-like young man! While shy when first meeting new people, Nacho is a good conversationalist and has a dry, funny sense of humor. He likes baseball and football as well as riding his bike. Another big interest is music. Nacho likes rap and has even recorded his own CD (scroll down to listen to Nacho's recordings). He would love to have more opportunities to do outdoor activities like fishing and camping. Nacho loves animals and will tell stories about his foster family’s pets. His foster mom says Nacho has a “heart for life [and a] zest for living.”

As Nacho has matured, he has come to realize more and more how important it is to him to have a family of his own – a family that is nurturing and trustworthy and will not give up on him. Multiple placements since coming into foster care in 1996 and two guardianships that were ultimately not permanent have exacerbated his issues of past trauma, attention difficulties, mood swings, and difficulty trusting and forming attachments.

Nacho is one of those kids who can leave parents scratching their heads in confusion. His usual demeanor is friendly, polite and kind-hearted, but when he is triggered his behavior can escalate. This usually occurs when his sense of fairness is threatened, when he believes an injustice has occurred, when confronted about lying, and when joking around has gotten out of control. In these moments, he needs the space and time to deescalate and often will come back to apologize and make efforts not to repeat the behavior. Nacho can be self-aware and will acknowledge his “anger management” struggles. On a day-to-day basis, Nacho’s foster mom reports that his greatest struggles are lying, stealing and outbursts. Families who can provide stability, structure, consistency and attention delivered in a direct, nurturing manner will be the best match for Nacho.

At school, Nacho enjoys being around his friends and appreciates that his teachers help him when he is struggling. His favorite subjects are math, science and English. Academically, Nacho can come across as being unmotivated. Those who know Nacho, think that this attitude stems from the fact that he has tried so hard in the past only to find failure, that poor academic performance is no longer that important to him. After high school, Nacho hopes to go to college and/or to become an electrician.

Nacho desperately needs the loving support of an adoptive family. He is afraid of rejection and may test his family, so Nacho really needs to have adoptive parent(s) who understand that his past neglect and abandonment have made it difficult for him to open himself to further hurt. He will need time and the space to trust. He needs a family that is not looking for “perfection” but rather is very accepting and finds joy in the road to improvement. With love, encouragement, stability, and commitment, Nacho’s kind heart will surely shine.
