Legally free, Jonathan came into foster care in September 2004. For a boy who has lost every significant relationship from his early life, he needs lots of therapeutic supports. His emotional and psychological issues, as well as symptoms of attention difficulties and high energy, require regular mental health treatment that includes counseling, behavioral management, and medication therapy. Jonathan is making progress in increasing his social skills and strengthening his personal boundaries. Now in eighth grade, he has individual supports for his emotional and behavioral issues. While Jonathan says he wants to have a mom-and-dad family where he can be the only child or the youngest by more than a few years, his worker also wants to hear from all families who have interest in learning more about him. Having a stay-at-home parent to be his primary advocate for educational and therapeutic services could be very advantageous. It would be helpful for the adoptive folks to have had previous educational training or work experience with children, and to have a good grasp of how early neglect and abuse can impact a child’s sense of well being and his development. Being willing to participate with Jonathan in family counseling during his transition into his new home could be a wonderful way for his new family to express their love and commitment to him. |
