ANYEAH (8/95) is a very kind, lovely, young teenager of African American heritage who enjoys reading. She is on target developmentally and is a very social individual. Anyeah enjoys hanging out with friends, playing and working on the computer, listening to music, and dancing. She’s interested, too, in playing basketball and soccer.

Anyeah responds well to structure, planning, and consistency, as well as calm, nurturing adults – especially those who take individual time to listen to hear and hang out with her. When the rules, expectations, and limits are clear and consistent, and rewards and consequences known ahead of time, Anyeah will most often comply and be cooperative.

Throughout much of her childhood, Anyeah’s grandmother was the primary care provider for her, and the death of her grandmother a year ago has been a very difficult, very huge loss for Anyeah.

Anyeah’s relationships with both her birth sister and with her birth mother have been strained over the years. The neglect and abuse of Anyeah’s early years may have contributed to Anyeah’s difficulty trusting and forming attachments.

Anyeah has a lot of energy and requires a bit more parental attention and supervision to help her stay on track than many other girls her age. Anyeah has difficulty expressing her feelings and will benefit from having parent(s) who can help her put her feelings into words instead of acting them out. Anyeah’s high energy sometimes gets in the way of giving other people the space they want, and she needs support, too, in strengthening her boundaries. It is helpful for her to have a caring adult nearby to quietly redirect her when needed. When Anyeah has support from the adults around her in focusing her energy in structured, healthy ways, she generally gets along nicely with peers and can maintain friendships. Like many young teens, Anyeah is still a bit emotionally young for her age.

Anyeah is currently participating in weekly mental health counseling. Current therapy goals are to work on a healthy self-image, increase her social skills, especially with peers, and to strengthen her boundaries. Anyeah’s treatment program also includes medication therapy, which helps to increase her ability to focus and to have better internal control and to decrease her energy. It is likely that Anyeah will need to have such therapeutic supports for the foreseeable future.

Now in seventh grade, Anyeah has individual supports to assist her in reading and math. She also benefits from having behavioral supports in the classroom. When motivated and assisted, Anyeah works at a seventh grade level.

Anyeah has done well in both two-parent and single mom families, so her worker wants to hear from those couples and single moms who have the desire and the skills to parent and guide a young teenage girl through adolescence and into adulthood. Anyeah could benefit greatly by being the youngest of one or two older siblings who have good social skills and are emotionally and behaviorally appropriate.
