While not everybody has had the opportunity to see the very loving, caring side of DeWayne’s personality, this is changing as his needs are being addressed. With the help of his foster family and therapeutic supports, DeWayne continues to work on talking about the things that bother him instead of acting them out. He is also working on developing ways to be more attentive and direct his energy in positive ways. DeWayne routinely uses pulls-up and takes over the counter medication to help handle his significant toileting difficulties, which are believed to have a psychological basis. DeWayne also needs a safety plan in place to help him strengthen his boundaries and develop good personal safety skills. To help him stay on track, he needs very attentive supervision around younger children. Because DeWayne is bright and verbal, his social worker believes that he could benefit from having cognitive behavioral therapeutic supports in place to address his various issues. There are already therapeutic supports in place to help him manage his attention and high energy issues and his anxiety. Among other issues which need to be addressed are DeWayne’s symptoms of sensory integration disorder. who is reportedly allergic to nickel, also needs to use hypoallergenic soaps to avoid rashes. In school, DeWayne does well academically in most subjects. He benefits greatly from having attentive parental supervision and encouragement on the home front to do his homework. All families who have interest in DeWayne – traditional and nontraditional – are encouraged to call. While DeWayne’s worker would ideally like to place him with two energetic, active parents, she wants to hear from those wonderful single moms and dads who have strong support systems of family, friends, and community resources. Having adoptive folk(s) who have a good grasp of how early trauma can impact a child’s sense of well-being will be a key to understanding DeWayne’s issues. Of course, his parent(s) need to have pride in his heritage and be able to provide opportunities for him to feel connected to the African American community. |
