Now in sixth grade, Wesley is working to catch up academically to his peers. Extra supports in the classroom are helping him to do that, and he also has a one-on-one aide to help him stay on track behaviorally. With the support of his foster family, with whom he has lived since July 2007, and various therapeutic supports, Wesley is making progress in lessening the impact of past trauma on his behavior, learning to trust adults, and increasing his ability to manage his attention difficulties and high energy. Being willing to participate with him in family counseling during his transition into his new home would be a wonderful way for his adoptive parents to show their love and commitment to him. It could also underscore for Wesley that his new folks are open to using such supports to help family members resolve issues and to make behavioral changes. Wesley is going to need his adoptive family’s wholehearted support as he continues, for the foreseeable future, to work on his issues. His worker wants to hear from couples and single moms and dads who have strong support systems of family, friends, and community resources. Folks who have already parented and have adult children might be just the ticket, especially if they have had experience with children who have suffered early trauma. Wesley really needs parents who are patient and loving, yet firm, and who can provide the structured, predictable, supervised environment that he needs to continue to move forward. Yes, there will be challenges, but there will be many rewards as you are able to help this boy reclaim his life. |
