Jawon is working with his counselor, school, and foster mother on strengthening his boundaries and developing appropriate personal safety skills. At school, he benefits from having individual academic supports and help in developing his social skills. As he is learning to share and to be cooperative with other children, his tendency to be aggressive and to want to dominate other kids is lessening. He benefits greatly from having an adult nearby to redirect him and help him stay on track. Legally free, Jawon came into alternative care in July 2007. He was with his first foster family for 18 months, and then placed in his current foster home where he has lived since December 2008. Jawon has six siblings but has a relationship with only one older brother. He lived with that brother for a period of time, but the brother's father was not a permanent resource for Jawon. Jawon continues to have contact with the brother, as the boys attend the same school. Jawon will be counting on his adoptive folk(s) to help him maintain a sibling connection with his brother. Jawon’s mother and his maternal grandparents would also like to have some contact with him, following his successful adoption. Jawon needs an adoptive family who will provide the love and individual attention he desires, as well as a structured, consistent, stable home environment where he can feel safe and secure. His new parent(s) should have a good grasp of how early neglect and abuse can impact a child’s sense of well being and his emotional and behavioral development. They also need to be strong advocate for his educational, social, and therapeutic needs. Being willing to part6icipate with him in family counseling during his transition into their home could be a wonderful way for his adoptive parent(s) to demonstrate their love and commitment to him. It would also show him that his new folk(s) value using such therapeutic means to help family members resolve difficulties and make changes. |
