ANTHONY (9/00) and ADRIAN (11/04) are full brothers of African American heritage who are healthy and very attractive. Developmentally on target, Anthony is of normal height while Adrian is tall for his age. Both boys have good appetites, are up to date on all medical and dental appointments and have no current health or dental concerns. The boys are not yet legally free.

Anthony wants to do well and to make the significant adults in his life proud. He is eager to please and likes to help. He follows directions easily, is always willing to help, and will ask if there is anything else that needs to be done before going to play. Anthony wants meaningful relationships with others. He enjoys school and loves spending time with his brothers. His foster parents say that having a warm-up period is helpful when he is getting acquainted with new people. Anthony is very soft-spoken, and initially he comes across as shy or even withdrawn, but he is very strong willed.

Adrian is a joy, according to his foster parents – loving, adaptable, and affectionate! He thrives on attention. Adrian, who is almost always smiling and makes good eye contact, likes to tell jokes. He is very inquisitive, too, and always wants to know why, how, when, and what. Generally a happy child, he is eager to please and help out – he especially enjoys helping with laundry. Very active and very adventurous, playing basketball is a favorite activity; he likes playing other games, too, and going to the park to swing, run, and climb. Adrian needs highly attentive supervision around strangers, as he can be way too friendly with folks he doesn’t know. Adrian also has difficulty paying attention and sitting still.

Anthony and Adrian came into foster care in February 2008. They have been in their current foster home since February 2009. Their foster mom and dad are also caring for one of the boys’ half-siblings, and the foster parents see that the boys have visitations with two other half-siblings. The boys are dealing with issues of grief and loss over the death of their birth mother in 2007, as well as emotional and behavioral issues associated with past trauma. As the boys are growing up, they will be counting on their adoptive family to help them maintain contact with their siblings.

The boys need highly skilled adoptive parent(s) who are able to be patient and understanding, while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries and rules. It is imperative that the new parents understand how to enforce rules and implement consequences in a matter-of-fact manner, without emotional reactions or value judgments. Given the boy’s loss of their mother, a successful permanent placement will be extremely important in their working through their feelings of grief and loss. Anthony and Adrian will benefit greatly from a stable, permanent placement in an environment that can provide hem with a predictable daily routine, support, and lots of affection. The folks chosen to adopt Anthony must be willing to use outside therapeutic resources, at least on an as needed basis, for the foreseeable future to help the boys acclimate and settle into their new home, school, and community. Of course, the adoptive parent(s) need to take pride in the boys' heritage and help them feel connected to the African American community.
