Vicktorea is a very talkative and happy nine-year old with dark blonde hair and brown eyes. She enjoys interacting and playing with other children. Her favorite television show is Hannah Montana. Her teachers report that she is nicely cooperative and asks for help when needed. She works well in small groups and is makes an effort to gain friends. Elizabeth, who has the same dark blonde hair and brown eyes of her older sister, is soft spoken, yet socially engaging and highly cooperative. She likes sports and other outside activities. She is the most shy of the three children. Dylan is a very likeable boy who can be a mixed bag of emotions. He thrives when he has structure and lots of affection. He also has very good manners, and says please and thank you, and knocks on the bathroom door before entering. He likes to be helpful around the house, assisting with chores such as sweeping and wiping down counters. Dylan appears to attach very quickly (much like his sisters) however with this attachment comes a fear that he will get “left” somewhere. Vicktorea, Elizabeth, and Dylan are physically healthy. All three children enjoy being physically active and thrive when given the opportunity to play in a park or other setting where their gross motor skills can be exercised. They also strive to please those around them and make others happy. Both Vicktorea and Dylan appear to have some developmental delays. Vicktorea, who is in the fourth grade but is reading at a first grade level, has academic supports. She has difficulty using vocabulary and formulating sentences and grammar. She needs extra assistance in learning basic reading skills and reading comprehension. It should be noted that Vicktorea is very quick to change from happy to sad. Based on an evaluation, there are concerns with Dylan’s small motor skills. At this time he cannot write his name and struggles with word recognition. Referrals have been made to Head Start and Early Intervention resources. While not yet enrolled in either program, he is on waiting lists. Elizabeth is a third grader who is currently performing at grade level. She participated in Head Start and was eligible for academic supports. During an evaluation conducted January 2009, the evaluator states that Elizabeth has excellent concentration and memory. When Vicktorea and Dylan first entered care, their awareness of personal safety skills and appropriate boundaries were poor. Since then, they have made significant gains with therapeutic supports and a structured, supportive, safe home environment with a safety plan in place. While Elizabeth did not have those challenges, she is a child who is quick cry when she does not get her way. There continue to be therapeutic supports in place to address each child’s needs. The children have been in and out of care for the last five years. During that time, Vicktorea and Elizabeth have been in six foster homes and Dylan in seven. The children are not currently placed together due to limited space. Vicktorea, Elizabeth, and Dylan need parents who can offer a high level of consistency, stability and routine. These children thrive on regular routines because they have lacked stability and security in their young lives. They need a family that can provide positive attention and calm, consistent limit setting. All three need to continue to work on trusting adults and understanding that they will be there to take care of them. Having adoptive parents who are patient and understanding of the trauma they have suffered and their attachment issues will go a long way to helping the children succeed. |
