REBECCA (2/93) has learned a lot about healthy relationships and friendships since coming into foster care, and she appreciates being part of a loving, nurturing foster family who value children. That’s the kind of adoptive family Rebecca wants to have. And she would like to have both older and younger siblings, and family pets, too. Rebecca enjoys school and is a good student who gets mostly A’s and B’s. Her school program includes an individualized educational plan which provide extra supports in math, reading, and living skills. A big fan of Hannah Montana and Twilight, Rebecca enjoys watching TV, listening to music, and playing with pets. She has a good time, too, going to movies with her friends or having them over to her foster home to hang out. Rebecca, who came into foster care in August 2008, will be legally free at the end of June 2009.

Rebecca has some emotional and social delays, which are thought to be related to her early environment, and emotionally she can seem much younger than her 16 years. She also has symptoms associated with significant past trauma, which include somatic complaints, nightmares and blackouts. Therapeutic supports are in place to help Rebecca. Although she has gained an understanding of personal space and healthy boundaries, her eagerness to fit in with peers suggest that her adoptive folks need to help her further strengthen her boundaries and increase her personal safety skills.

Participating with her in family counseling during her transition into their home would be a wonderful way for her adoptive parent(s) to show their love and commitment to her. It would also demonstrate to Rebecca that her new folks' value using such resources to help family members make behavioral changes and work through painful issues. It is likely that Rebecca will need to have therapeutic supports on an as-needed basis for the foreseeable future.

The significant relationships in Rebecca’s life are those that she has established with her caregiver, social workers, and school friends. She may want to have some ongoing contact following her successful adoption with these folks who have proven to be important to her.

Rebecca could do well in a two-parent family or a single mom home of any culture. Rebecca receives SSI.
