Over the past year, Kris has made tremendous strides with the help of his foster parents, a special educational program focused on social and emotional growth and making behavioral changes, and bi-monthly therapeutic supports focused on helping him deal with his feelings of loss and abandonment, as well as attention difficulties and high energy. Kris' adoptive family will need to have a good grasp of how his attention difficulties and high energy affect him. He is easily distracted, and really needs parents who do not get discouraged if he changes his mind rather quickly and is off in a new direction. Kris has done very well in foster care, where he has made significant gains in his behavior. He has developed attachment to his caregivers, and is getting along very well with his five foster siblings. While Kris does not currently have a relationships with most of his half-siblings and step-siblings, he mentions them often. Recently, he began visitations with a half-brother who is also being adopted. He will be counting on his adoptive family to help him maintain his connection to that brother. It will be important for Kris to have adoptive parent(s) who have a good grasp of how early negelct can impact a child’s sense of well being and emotional and behavioral development. His adoptive folks also need to have a good understanding of behavioral symptoms associated with attention difficulties and high energy. While Kris is a very smart, clever child, he needs support in school, and his adoptive family will need to communicate well with the teachers and educators to ensure that his needs are being met. Because Kris need to have lots of parental attention and love, he will likely do best as an only child or the youngest of one or two older siblings.
