“Hi! My name in Anthony and I am 15 years old and I’ve been in foster care for almost five years. My birthday is in July, and when I get older I hope to be a policeman/farmer. I would really like to live on a farm with horses, pigs, and cows, but I’m ok with living in the city as long as I have parents to love me. I would prefer being an only child but I am ok with a sibling. I also like school but it is not my favorite thing; I get B’s and above except for in science; I have a passing grade but it is still challenging. (Note: Anthony did well this past school year with a few behavioral supports. For the 2009-2010 school year he will be in tenth grade.) I would really like to live in the country if possible. I also really love elderly people, because I used to take care of my grandpa when my grandma died and ever sense I have liked elderly people. I really like to play video games and I stay occupied if you have animals. I also really love dogs and cats. I have not met an animal I do not like, so it would be hard living without animals. I also would like to own my own dog so I have my own responsibilities. Probably my favorite animal would be a dog, but I would not like having a lot of dogs – just 3 or 4; and my favorite dog would probably have to be a chocolate lab. I also want you to know the real me and what my vocabulary is like, so I want you to know that I wrote this not my counselor or social worker. So if there is a family out there for me that would love and care for me I would love to be living with you. I know many people want a baby because they can turn out the way you want, but I’m willing to change and act how you want. All I want is for you to give me a chance!!!!” Legally free, Anthony came into foster care in March 2006. The circumstances of his early years have left him struggling with behaviors and emotions related to past trauma. He also has symptoms of attention difficulties and high energy. Anthony is a usually a really good kid. With the help of therapeutic supports, he is working on learning behavioral strategies and tools to better manage his feelings of anger and frustration, becoming more truthful, and accepting responsibility for his own choices and behavior. His worker wants to hear from couples or single moms and dads in whose family Anthony can be the only child or the youngest of one or two older siblings. He needs folks who truly like teenagers and who will see that he has the structure, clear, consistent rules, expectations, and limits that help him do well. Being able to have a dog of his own would be a wonderful bonus. |
