Multiple placements in foster care exacerbated Britney’s past trauma and difficulty trusting, and in early 2006, stability was provided for her in a therapeutic group home. Amidst the structure, emotional safety, experienced child care, and counseling of her placement, she was able to truly begin to deal with her special needs. Her residential program also provided the therapeutic supports to help her better manage her attention difficulties and curb her energy, and moderate her mood swings. During the last six months of her residency, Britney was able to make significant and steady progress in several areas (particularly in curbing her tendency to be aggressive), all of which led to her transition to a therapeutic foster home last fall. Britney needs a structured and organized way to deal with issues in therapy, and while she has been receiving intensive case management services in the community since graduating from her residential program, she has not yet had a consistent provider for any significant period of time which is so important in developing a therapeutic rapport. She has been working with her most current provider since June 2009. For the 2009-2010 school year Britney will be in regular seventh-grade classroom. It is likely that she will need some academic and behavioral supports to help her with math and her tendency to be too chatty. A small, well-structured and organized family environment with parents who are familiar with behavioral tools and strategies, who will interact with her in matter-of-fact, non-judgmental ways, and who do not expect Britney to quickly develop trust and attachments will meet her needs best. They also need to be willing and able to provide the high level of supervision that she will need for the foreseeable future. Her adoptive folks should be familiar and be truly capable of focusing on the important issues instead of the minor ones. They also need to be strong advocates for educational and therapeutic resources, and participate in her therapy program as requested. Britney should be an only child or the youngest of much older siblings or even adult siblings. |
