DOMINIC (8/02) is considerate and compassionate with younger children and family pets (he especially loves puppies!), and he shows empathy for anyone who is hurt or sick. Dominic shows a strong sense of curiosity about the world around him. He is enthusiastic about many activities and family outings and enjoys going for rides in the car, especially to the mountains or anywhere new. He also loves to watch trains and airplanes. He recently had great fun taking his first train ride. He loved it!

Dominic thoroughly enjoys being outdoors where he can ride his bike, jump and romp on a trampoline, swim, and go for long walks. Sponge Bob is a favorite cartoon character and he also enjoys watching kid’s action movies.

A handsome boy with blond hair, beautiful big green eyes, and a huge smile, Dominic can be very endearing and affectionate. He often crawls up into his foster mom’s lap and tells them he loves her. He not only enjoys giving hugs, he loves to hold hands.

Dominic has made dramatic gains in his emotional and behavioral development since coming into foster care in August 2005 due to lack of stimulation as a baby and toddler. Initially, Dominic had very severe behavioral issues exacerbated by his attention difficulties, high energy, language delays and lack of self help skills. He is now living in therapeutic foster care where he has other minimal therapeutic supports in place, which include play therapy, to help him continue to move forward.

In school, Dominic attends a special education classroom. For most of last year, he needed a smaller classroom setting but by the end of the year, he was already transitioning into the larger classroom setting. This is a significant step forward. Dominic says he enjoys going to school. He also likes to demonstrate what he has learned to his foster mom and to his social worker.

Dominic’s worker is especially interested in hearing from highly nurturing couples who have the time and the desire to give him a great deal of parental time and attention. His worker tells us that Dominic could do wonderfully well with two dads or with a mom and dad. It will be helpful for Dominic to be an only child or the older sibling of one younger girl. Having a good grasp of how severe neglect impacts a child’s sense of well being and safety and his overall development will help Dominic’s adoptive folks understand his issues.

The parental traits that will be most valued by this darling boy are patience, kindness, and the willingness to take time to explain things to him in very clear language. Being willing to provide him with limited choices may also help him to experience a nice sense of control in his life.

A wonderful way for his new parents to show their love and commitment to him would be to participate with him in family counseling during his transition into his new home. It would also underscore for him that his adoptive folks value using such resources to help family member grow and develop and to overcome past hurts. It is likely that Dominic will need to have therapeutic supports in place for the foreseeable future, and parental support and willingness to participate when requested will be part of meeting his needs.
